Costa Rica has a high incidence of gastric cancer, so the screening to detect this disease early is very important. The early detection of stomach cancer is done through an upper endoscopy. During the study, the doctor inserts an endoscope (a thin, flexible tube that has a light source and a small video camera attached to its end) through the throat. This instrument allows the doctor to observe the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and the first section of the small intestine. If abnormal areas are observed, biopsies (tissue samples) can be taken using instruments that are passed through the endoscope. Tissue samples are sent to a laboratory, where they are examined under a microscope to determine if cancer is present.
The Metropolitano Hospital offers superior endoscopy service in its branches in San José, Tibás and Lindora.
